How to Open a DXF File Online
Use this DXF viewer online in three steps – nothing to install, nothing to upload.
- 1
Choose or drop your drawing
Pick a drawing from your device or drag one onto the DXF file viewer above, and sign in with a free account if asked. Files up to 200 MB open right in the viewer; anything over 20 MB just takes a few seconds longer.
- 2
Zoom, pan and inspect
Scroll to zoom toward the cursor, drag to pan and double-click to fit the whole drawing. On a phone, pinch to zoom. The readout shows real drawing coordinates under the cursor, and a dark or light background keeps thin lines easy to see.
- 3
Toggle layers and export
Turn layers on or off in the viewer's side panel and check units, size and entity counts. Then download what is visible as a PNG image or an SVG vector file; hide note or dimension layers first if you want a clean outline.
What This Free DXF File Viewer Supports
This DXF file viewer is built for the 2D drawings people actually send around: shop drawings, laser and CNC cut files, floor plans and exports from vector apps.
R12 to 2018 and newer
The viewer opens ASCII files saved by AutoCAD R12 through 2018 and newer, plus exports from most CAD, CAM and vector programs. Older drawings with Chinese, Japanese or Cyrillic text in legacy code pages display correctly too.
All common 2D geometry
Lines, polylines with arcs, circles, arcs, ellipses, splines, solids, hatches (shown as fills), points and leaders. 3D faces and mesh polylines are drawn in plan view.
Blocks and dimensions
Block references are expanded with their scale, rotation and mirroring – nested blocks, arrays and attributes included. Dimensions are drawn as saved in the file.
TEXT and MTEXT
Single-line and multi-line text with rotation, alignment and symbols such as Ø, ° and ±. The viewer draws text in a standard font, so spacing can differ slightly from SHX fonts.
Layers, colors and info
The viewer lists every layer with its color and object count. Layers that are off or frozen in the file start hidden. The info panel shows version, units, size and entity counts.
Export to PNG or SVG
Save the visible layers as a sharp PNG up to 4096 px, or as an SVG that keeps the real-world size of millimeter, centimeter and inch drawings.
The DXF file viewer doesn't support DWG files, binary DXF, 3D solids and surfaces (ACIS data), linetype dash patterns or hatch pattern lines yet.
Why a Browser-Based DXF File Viewer Is Safer
Most online DXF viewer sites upload your drawing to a server before they show it. This free DXF viewer draws it on your own device.
Your file never leaves your device
The DXF file viewer parses and draws the file with code running on your own computer or phone. Nothing is uploaded, stored or seen by us – useful for client drawings under NDA.
Nothing to install or pay for
No CAD license or plug-in, just a free account. Once you are signed in and the page has loaded, this DXF file viewer keeps working even if your connection drops.
Big drawings stay responsive
Files are parsed in a background thread, so the viewer stays responsive while a large drawing loads, and there is no upload queue to wait for.
DXF File Viewer FAQ
Common questions about using this online DXF viewer to open, check and convert drawings.
How do I open a DXF file without AutoCAD?
Use a DXF file viewer like this one: pick your drawing with the button at the top of the page and it opens in seconds, with no AutoCAD, DWG TrueView or other install. If you also need to edit it, free desktop programs such as LibreCAD and QCAD can do that.
Is this online DXF viewer free? Do I need an account?
It is free, but you need a free account. Sign in once and this DXF file viewer opens as many files as you like, with no watermark on viewing, layer control or PNG and SVG export. Everything runs on your device, so the DXF file viewer has no server cost to pass on.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read and rendered locally in your browser and never sent to us; signing in tells us who you are, not what you open. You can check it yourself: once you are signed in and the page has loaded, disconnect from the internet and the DXF file viewer still opens files.
Does this free DXF viewer work on Windows, Mac and phones?
Yes. Windows and macOS have no built-in DXF file viewer, but this one runs in any modern browser – Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox – on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. On a touch screen, pinch to zoom and drag to pan. There is nothing to install, so it also works on work computers where you can't add software.
Why are some objects or text missing from my drawing?
The usual reasons are: the layer is off or frozen in the file (tick it in the Layers panel); the objects are 3D solids or regions stored as ACIS data, which a 2D viewer can't draw; or the shapes are far from the rest of the drawing, so use “Fit to window” or hide distant layers. The File info panel lists any entity types the DXF file viewer couldn't draw.
Why won't my DXF file open?
The DXF file viewer reads ASCII files and names the problem when one doesn't fit. A binary file has to be saved again as ASCII in your CAD program, and a DWG has to be exported first with File → Save As → DXF. If the file holds only 3D solids, there are no 2D lines to draw. Otherwise, re-save it from the program that made it and try again.
How large a file can the DXF file viewer open?
Up to 200 MB. Anything over 20 MB takes a few seconds to parse, and the viewer stays usable meanwhile because the work runs in a background thread. Extremely dense drawings are capped at about four million points; past that, the viewer shows as much as it can and tells you the view is partial.
How do I check a drawing's units and size?
Open the drawing in the DXF file viewer and look at the File info panel. It shows the unit stored in the file header (millimeters, inches and so on) and the overall width × height. If it says “Unitless”, the author didn't set units; the cursor coordinates still show the real drawing values, so you can compare them with a known dimension.
Can I view one layer at a time?
Yes. Every layer appears in the Layers panel of the DXF file viewer, with its color and object count. Untick a layer to hide it, or click “Hide all” and tick only the layers you need. PNG and SVG exports include only the visible layers.
Can I use this DXF viewer online to check a laser or CNC file?
Yes, it makes a good last check before you send a job. Open the cut file in the DXF file viewer, confirm the units and overall size under File info, hide construction or note layers, and zoom in on corners and small holes. When everything looks right, load the same file into LightBurn, VCarve or your CAM software.
What is the difference between DXF and DWG?
DWG is AutoCAD's native binary format. DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is the openly documented one, made for moving drawings between programs, which is why laser cutters, CNC and CAM tools ask for it. This DXF file viewer doesn't read DWG; to view one, open it in AutoCAD or another CAD program and use Save As → DXF first.
Can I convert DXF to SVG or PNG?
Yes. After opening the file in the DXF file viewer, click SVG for a vector file or PNG for an image up to 4096 px wide. For millimeter, centimeter and inch drawings the SVG keeps its real-world size, so it prints to scale. Only the layers you have switched on are exported.
